15.5.2026 | The Finnish Navy’s spring main exercise Narrow Waters 26-1 will be held from 20 to 27 May 2026. Exercise activities will take place in the coastal areas of Southern Finland and in the Gulf of Finland.

13.2.2026 | In the Gulf of Finland and the Archipelago Sea, there are 18 restricted sea areas which usually also contain a military area. Military areas are surrounded by a 100 metre movement restriction zone. This restriction also applies to anyone moving on the ice in winter.

Coastal Fleet consists of Headquarters and four squadrons: 4th Mine Countermeasures Squadron, 6th and 7th Surface Warfare Squadrons and 8th Service Support Squadron. Bases are situated in Turku and Kirkkonummi but the battleships operate around all Finnish territorial waters.

Captain (N) Sauli Rimmanen will assume the duties of Commander of the Coastal Fleet on 1 February 2025. Rimmanen will transfer to the task from Navy Command Finland where he has been serving as Chief of Staff. The change of command ceremony will be held at Pansio Base on 30 January 2025.

The commander of the United States Sixth Fleet and Naval Striking and Support Forces NATO, Vice Admiral Thomas E. Ishee will visit the Finnish Navy on Monday, 19 June.

The Finnish Navy rehearsed with the United States, Sweden and Estonia in the Northern Baltic Sea from 10 to 11 August.

The Finnish Defence Forces will deploy staff officers to the European Union’s Naval Force EUNAVFOR Operation Aspides established in February 2024, and to the US-led Operation Prosperity Guardian launched in December 2023, both of them active in the Red Sea and its adjacent areas. The objective of the operations is to secure free and safe navigation in the Red Sea.

The Finnish Navy committed Katanpää-class mine countermeasures vessels MHC Katanpää and MHC Purunpää to the Nato Response Force’s Follow on Forces pool for 2022. Participating in the NATO Response Force, NRF, enhances the capability and interoperability of the Finnish Navy’s vessels and troops and its readiness to commit units to naval crisis management missions.

Exercise Atrain 23, led by the Coastal Brigade, will be held 26 May - 2 June 2023. The exercise activities will concentrate on the coast of the Gulf of Finland and the sea areas between the Hanko Peninsula and Hamina.

The autumn’s main exercise Freezing Winds 24, led by the Finnish Navy, will be held in southern Finland and in the Northern Baltic Sea from 18 to 29 November 2024. The autumn’s main exercise Freezing Winds 23 led by the Finnish Navy will be held from 20 November to 1 December 2023. In addition to the Finnish Navy, troops from the Finnish Army and Air Force, the Swedish Navy and several Allies will participate in this international naval exercise. Freezing Winds 23 is the first major naval exercise led by Finland as a member of NATO.

The Finnish, German, Norwegian and Swedish navies will rehearse anti-surface warfare and air defense off the Swedish south coast from 7 to 18 October 2024.

The United States Navy’s amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge will arrive in Helsinki for a port visit 5 - 8 August.

A detachment from the United States Marine Corps, a combination of subordinate units from II Marine Expeditionary Force (II MEF) has arrived in Finland and will train together with Nyland Brigade until the end of August. The detachment with a strength of approximately 60 Marines will be deployed in Nyland Brigade, Dragsvik and it will operate mainly within the Brigade´s training areas.

The Finnish Navy 2024 spring main exercise Helka 24 will be held from 23 to 31 May 2024. The Navy will train execution of naval operations incl. laying of sea mines, as well as transfer of troops and combat tasks in the archipelago and on the coast.

The autumn’s main exercise Freezing Winds 22 to be led by the Finnish Navy will take place from 22 November -2 December 2022. Troops from the Finnish Navy, Army and Air Force as well as a great number of international partners will take part in this international naval exercise.

18.9.2025 | After her port visit to Helsinki, the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Bainbridge will move on to the northern Baltic Sea in order to train together with the Finnish and Swedish Navies and Nato Standing Maritime Group SNMG1.
