A United Stated Marine Corps unit will participate in the NATO-led Baltic Sentry mission, co-operating in Finland for about a month.

The US marine corps unit of about 40 persons will arrive in Finland this week and will co-operate with the Coastal Brigade. The platoon will use UAVs and these capabilities will be used to augment the combined Recognised Maritime picture.

NATO’s enhanced Vigilance Activity (EVA) is an integral part of the alliance’s collective defence, aiming at safeguarding critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea mainly by increasing surveillance.

For the Finnish Navy, the enhanced NATO activity in the Baltic Sea means increased presence at sea, heightened surveillance and exchange of information as well as increasing amount of exercising with the allies.

The cooperation of the Navy with the American forces is significant because it is the first such activity during the defense cooperation agreement (DCA) between Finland and the United States, which came into effect on September 1, 2024.
