13.2.2026 | In the Gulf of Finland and the Archipelago Sea, there are 18 restricted sea areas which usually also contain a military area. Military areas are surrounded by a 100 metre movement restriction zone. This restriction also applies to anyone moving on the ice in winter.

The Finnish Defence Forces will deploy staff officers to the European Union’s Naval Force EUNAVFOR Operation Aspides established in February 2024, and to the US-led Operation Prosperity Guardian launched in December 2023, both of them active in the Red Sea and its adjacent areas. The objective of the operations is to secure free and safe navigation in the Red Sea.

The Finnish Navy rehearsed with the United States, Sweden and Estonia in the Northern Baltic Sea from 10 to 11 August.

The autumn’s main exercise Freezing Winds 24, led by the Finnish Navy, will be held in southern Finland and in the Northern Baltic Sea from 18 to 29 November 2024. The National Parade of the Flag Day of the Finnish Defence Forces will be held in Hanko on 4 June 2024. In addition to a review of troops and pass in review, the programme also includes an equipment display, boat rides, an aerobatic air display and a MILjazz Tour concert, among other things. Admission to the events is free.

Exercise Narrow Waters 25 to be led by the Finnish Navy will be held in the Archipelago Sea, the Gulf of Finland and on Finland’s southern coast from 21 - 28 May.

The international exercise Freezing Winds 22 led by the Finnish Navy will come to an end on Friday 2 December.  The Finnish training troops will return to their home garrisons for post-exercise administration by noon on Friday.

The Finnish Navy 2024 spring main exercise Helka 24 will be held from 23 to 31 May 2024. The Navy will train execution of naval operations incl. laying of sea mines, as well as transfer of troops and combat tasks in the archipelago and on the coast.

The United States Navy’s amphibious assault ship USS Kearsarge will arrive in Helsinki for a port visit 5 - 8 August.

18.9.2025 | After her port visit to Helsinki, the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Bainbridge will move on to the northern Baltic Sea in order to train together with the Finnish and Swedish Navies and Nato Standing Maritime Group SNMG1.

13.5.2022 | During the exercises that start on Friday 13th May, the troops will train, among other things, protection of maritime traffic, generation of situation picture as well as coastal combat tasks and the use of fire. The training will continue until the end of next week and it will be commanded by Finnish Navy Commander, Rear Admiral Jori Harju.

Coastal Fleet consists of Headquarters and four squadrons: 4th Mine Countermeasures Squadron, 6th and 7th Surface Warfare Squadrons and 8th Service Support Squadron. Bases are situated in Turku and Kirkkonummi but the battleships operate around all Finnish territorial waters.
