Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC Defence) has started the construction of the second multi-role corvette included in the Squadron 2020 project. Today, the 9th of October, the cutting of the steel structures for the hull of the second vessel of the Squadron started in the presence of invited guests in Rauma.

Squadron 2020 involves the building of four multi-purpose corvettes designed to operate in the changing conditions of the Baltic Sea.  Building the vessels and the complex design work involved advance hand in hand.  The keel of the first vessel was laid in Rauma last April.  The entire Squadron is scheduled to be complete by 2029.  The vessels were ordered by the Defence Forces Logistics Command.

The Navy’s Squadron 2020 project will replace some of the Navy’s current vessels.  The multi-purpose corvettes to be manufactured in the framework of the project will form the mainstay of Finland’s naval defence together with the systems of other forces.  The corvettes will generate significant capability also for NATO’s naval defence.

Through all the four seasons, the corvettes will be capable of laying sea mines, conducting surface operations and air defence, conducting anti-submarine operations, securing sea lines of communication and achieving sustained presence at sea.
