In war and crisis situations, the Finnish Defence Forces needs an ability to dispose of explosives at the bottom of the sea and on the ground. These technically demanding and lengthy course entities are not ones that can be completed in a minimum of time, so the needed competence should already be available. Hiring high-quality professional units on a permanent basis would, however, take up a big slice out of the defence budget.

The Finnish Defence Forces will provide executive assistance to the police in connection with the investigation of cable damage in the Gulf of Finland, including through the Navy´s capabilities such as the MHC Vahterpää, the auxiliary vessel Hylje and divers, other vessels and personnel, as well as compiling the recognized maritime picture and analysis of related data.

Captain (N) Sauli Rimmanen will assume the duties of Commander of the Coastal Fleet on 1 February 2025. Rimmanen will transfer to the task from Navy Command Finland where he has been serving as Chief of Staff. The change of command ceremony will be held at Pansio Base on 30 January 2025.

The Finnish, German, Norwegian and Swedish navies will rehearse anti-surface warfare and air defense off the Swedish south coast from 7 to 18 October 2024.

Chief of Staff of the French Navy, Admiral Nicolas Vaujour visited Finland on 6 March 2024.  The visit was hosted by the Commander of the Finnish Navy, Rear Admiral Tuomas Tiilikainen. 

The autumn’s main exercise Freezing Winds 23 led by the Finnish Navy will be held from 20 November to 1 December 2023. In addition to the Finnish Navy, troops from the Finnish Army and Air Force, the Swedish Navy and several Allies will participate in this international naval exercise. Freezing Winds 23 is the first major naval exercise led by Finland as a member of NATO.

The Finnish Navy committed Katanpää-class mine countermeasures vessels MHC Katanpää and MHC Purunpää to the Nato Response Force’s Follow on Forces pool for 2022. Participating in the NATO Response Force, NRF, enhances the capability and interoperability of the Finnish Navy’s vessels and troops and its readiness to commit units to naval crisis management missions.

9.10.2024 | Rauma Marine Constructions (RMC Defence) has started the construction of the second multi-role corvette included in the Squadron 2020 project. Today, the 9th of October, the cutting of the steel structures for the hull of the second vessel of the Squadron started in the presence of invited guests in Rauma.

11.4.2024 | The building of the first multi-purpose corvette included in the Squadron 2020 project has advanced to the keel laying phase. A traditional keel laying ceremony was celebrated at Rauma shipyard on Thursday 11 April 2024.

12.5.2026 | Puolustusliitto Naton yhteisen operatiivisen doktriinien työkokous järjestetään ensimmäistä kertaa Helsingissä 12.-14. toukokuuta 2026. Tavoitteena on parantaa yhteisoperointikykyä Naton jäsenmaiden välillä standardisoimalla yhteisiä doktriineja sekä niihin liittyvää terminologiaa. Tilaisuuteen on kutsuttu kaikki Naton 32 jäsenmaata, Naton komentorakenteen osat sekä Naton osaamiskeskusten edustajia.

12.5.2026 | Försvarsalliansen Natos gemensamma operativa doktrinverkstad arrangeras för första gången i Helsingfors den 12–14 maj 2026. Målet är att förbättra interoperabiliteten mellan Natos medlemsländer genom att standardisera gemensamma doktriner samt den tillhörande terminologin. Alla Natos 32 medlemsländer, delar av Natos kommandostruktur samt representanter från Natos kompetenscenter har bjudits in till evenemanget.

The Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, General David H. Berger, will visit the Finnish Navy on 1 June 2023.
