Strengthening cyber defence partnership between Finland and the United States

The bilateral cyber defence cooperation between Finland and the United States keeps progressing constantly. On December 10, 2024, a meeting was held at the Finnish Defence Command, bringing together the operational leadership of both nations. During the meeting, the progress of the partnership was evaluated, and future activities were guided.
In January 2024, Finland and the United States signed a Letter of Intent on advanced cyber partnership which creates a foundation for closer cyber defence cooperation. The objective of the Letter of Intent is to develop cyber defence to respond to the threats of today’s world. Almost a year after the signing of the Letter of Intent, the parties met at the Defence Command to evaluate the implementation of the past year’s development plan and to specify the activities to be carried out next year.
The event was hosted by Defence Command Assistant Chief of Staff, C5, Major General Jarmo Vähätiitto accompanied by Defence Command Assistant Chief of Staff, Operations, Brigadier General Aki Heikkinen. The United States counterpart in the event was the Deputy Director of United States European Command Plans and Operations Directorate, Brigadier General James D. Cleet.
Major General Jarmo Vähätiitto emphasizes the importance of the partnership and its systematic development:
– Developing the cyber defence partnership based on the Letter of Intent has been an important step in our long-standing collaboration. This year, we have advanced joint operations, including exercises conducted both in Finland and the United States. Our aim remains to deepen this cooperation further by enhancing information exchange, personnel exchanges, and joint operations. I want to thank Brigadier General Cleet and his delegation for their visit and commitment to advancing our cyber defense cooperation, stated Major General Vähätiitto.
