Chief of the Defence Command, Lieutenant General Vesa Virtanen inspected the Finnish troops in the Kosovo Force (KFOR) operation in Kosovo on 24 July 2024. During his visit, Virtanen also had a meeting with the Operation Commander, Major General Özkan Ulutaş, as well as with other KFOR leadership.

The topics of discussions included the mission’s proceeding towards its aims and the security situation in Kosovo. The discussions also emphasized the importance of long-term support for the peaceful development of Kosovo.

– Finland has participated in the NATO-led crisis management operation in Kosovo for 25 years now. Taking responsibility in joint NATO operations is important to us. We are committed to promoting stability and security both nationally and internationally, Lieutenant General Virtanen says.

Chief of the Defence Command was impressed by what he saw and satisfied with the work of the Crisis Management Force in Kosovo.

– The Finnish Crisis Management Force’s work in Kosovo is valuable and of top quality. Discussions with the KFOR Operation Commander made it clear that the operation leadership, too, appreciates the professionalism and attitude of the Finnish soldiers. The operation has been successful in carrying out the tasks it was mandated to do, supporting regional stability. I’d like to thank our soldiers for their contribution.

The total strength of the Finnish contingent in Kosovo is about 60 persons, consisting of staff officers, liaison officers, National Support Element and an engineer platoon. During the inspection, Lieutenant General Virtanen presented the Finnish engineer platoon with commemorative medals in honour of their contribution to peace-keeping.
